CROW PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Crows are part of the Corvidae family of birds. The most common species is the American Crow, which is found all over the United States. The second species is the Fish Crow, found on the East Coast and Southeastern United States.
Crows are considered medium to large birds, measuring 15-20” in size, with a wingspan of 33-39” which is quite impressive given their size. They have a thick neck and body, with long thin legs. Their beaks are thick and pointed at the end. In appearance, Crows are completely black, including their feathers, beak, legs and feet. While they are molting, at times, their older feathers are brown in appearance.
It can be tricky to tell the difference between a Raven and a Crow. In flight, a Crows tail is rounded, and their wing tips have long fingers. Ravens have a tapered shaped tail, with long wings with very short fingertips. Ravens also soar so they are often much higher in flight than a Crow. Along with being larger, Ravens also have a thicker beak with a slightly curved tip.
Crows have a diverse habitat and are commonly found in fields, woodlands, forests, parks and open spaces. They are also found in our neighborhoods, living on lawns, parking lots, and roadsides. Crows are opportunistic when it comes to finding stable food sources, so they are often found near landfills, vacant lots, Cemeteries, beaches and campgrounds.
They thrive near people, especially if we provide a consistent food source. Most would not consider setting up a Crow habitat when bird feeding, but if you put out peanuts or other fruits they will come and get a snack. Outside of purposeful feeding, Crows are known to hang out near our homes to forage in our garbage.
However, it should be noted that Crows do interact with humans, and quite regularly. It is not always for an easy meal, at times they observe us and our behavior and mannerisms, just as we find ourselves doing with them. With their Mensa level intellect, they study us and learn how we communicate and how we go about our lives. They use this information to help them survive in the world.
Crows are omnivorous and will eat just about anything. This includes meat, plants, animals, berries, grains and even human food. They have a diverse menu selection and are often seen eating mice, earthworms, seeds, peanuts, fruit, and biologicals found in garbage. Crows are opportunistic, and they are an aggressive predator during nesting season. They are known to eat nestlings of Sparrows, Robins, and Loons. Staying true to form, they are well known to feast on carrion.
Crows typically mate for life and stay bonded and connected to each other throughout their lives. Although there can be exceptions to this. If a first-year breeding pair is unsuccessful, they will part ways and try again with a new partner. If this occurs, the young Crows generally go back home to Mom and Dad.
During nesting season, Crows typically nest on the horizontal branches of a tree or in the crotch of the trunk of a large tree. Typically, they nest about a quarter from the top of a tree. Although they prefer Evergreens, they will nest in Deciduous Trees if available.
Both the male and female take part in nest building activities, as well as the family unit. Nesting materials are typically twigs, sticks, pine needles, and soft animal hair to build the nest and prepare the nest bowl for incubation. Most nests are about 6-19” across with the nest bowl measuring about 6-14” in length and 4-15” deep.
A female Crow will lay up to 9 eggs and incubate them for just under 3 weeks. Once hatched, it takes about 6 weeks for the newly hatched Crows to leave the nest. Once they leave the nest, they stay close to their parents. For the American Crow, they tend to stay together in family groups for several years after birth.
They are extremely social and are rarely seen alone. Many of the Crows seen foraging in groups are actually part of a family group that includes the breeding pair and the offspring from several years past. The entire family takes part in raising the young Crows. It is a cooperative effort among the tribe.
Crows are social birds, even with other species. They are often seen foraging with other Corvidae’s, like Magpies, and Blue Jays. Seeing a Crow perched in a tree while a Blue Jay is foraging is quite a sight to see, the Blue Jay is almost 70% smaller. Although they both share powerful vocals and can be heard for miles.
Crows are highly intelligent and have an intricate language. They work together to solve problems, such as how to get the lid off a garbage can or opening up food containers. Crows are often seen communicating with each other with various calls, squawks and body language.
It is fascinating to watch Crows working together to get a garbage can open. During this activity several get in on the action until they achieve success. And when they do, everyone wins. Crows typically do not fight over the food source and share in the wealth among their tribe mates.
Part of the Crows’ intelligence is their intricate language. They are known to mimic other bird sounds as well as human sounds. This is due to their intelligence, vocal anatomy, and behavior. Unlike humans that have a larynx, birds like the Crow, have unique vocal structure known as the syrinx which sits at the bottom of the trachea near the bronchial split.
It is this unique forking pattern that allows Crows to lateralize their sounds, which means they can make sounds from both the left side and the right side. Some Crows are so advanced that they can produce sounds from both at the same time.
Many birds, like the Crow also have the brain capacity to engage in mimicry. They have a cortical association near the neocortex which is responsible for higher order behaviors. With birds, this is a cornerstone of communication whether it is finding a mate, finding a food source, or defending territory. The role of mimicry plays an important role in communicating among their peers.
Another interesting fact about Crows is they are also one of the birds known to mob and harass Raptors. They typically like to harass Owls, Buteo size Hawks and Herons. Although most of this behavior occurs during nesting season, Crows can be quite aggressive and sometimes do it just for the hell of it. They are tricksters in this way.

KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Communication
With their ability to mimic sounds, Crows are excellent communicators. They understand group dynamics and the power of working collaboratively to achieve a common goal. Crows use these skills not only to find unique food sources, but also to protect their tribe from harm. With their vast intelligence, Crows can also learn human language. There are many scientific studies that have been conducted showing that with repetitive training, they can learn specific words.
Crows teach us the importance of communication. At times it can be challenging to speak up, especially when it involves discussing feelings, needs, or wants. We may find ourselves thinking that we are asking too much or being too demanding. As a result, we tend to put our needs on the back burner.
When we do this, we are not being true to ourselves. Allowing ourselves to remain stuck in this pattern can ultimately leave us feeling sad and isolated. We want so desperately to speak up but our fear stops us in our tracks, the what if this, or what if that. The compulsive ruminating that goes on in the chaos of our minds.
Crows are fearless and they never shy away from speaking their truth. They remind us to find the courage and strength within to get to the root of our fears and doubts and release their hold over us. When we release the attachments holding us back from growth, we develop stronger self-esteem and find our voice. We have the courage to speak up and speak our truth.
Intelligence
Crows are highly intelligent, social creatures. They bond with each other and live together in family groups with the mated pair and the siblings from years past. With their extensive communication patterns, they work together to find new food sources, to protect the home from predators, and at times, to cause trouble. With their intelligence, Crows are also known to mimic other birds as well as pick up on human speech patterns.
Intelligence has many expressions. For some, being smart and learning new things has always come naturally. While for others, the thought of learning something new can cause great angst. Whether that is a result of a learning disability or a deeper issue needing to be addressed.
One of the more common insecurities we carry with us is that we are not smart enough to accomplish the things we want in life. This often will come up when we want to try something new, like a career path, or hobby.
The loud voice of our ego shows up to tell us how we lack the education or experience to try such a thing. Although our ego does serve a purpose, to ensure survival and protect us, it also has its challenges. Especially if we are carrying around unresolved issues.
The Crow reminds us to look within for the answers we seek. Our physical world intelligence will only get us so far, and there are times we need to go within, into our inner landscape, to discover the root cause of our struggles. When we release the hold of the past, we gain clarity and understanding. We grow in spiritual wisdom, as we embrace the lessons from our experiences.
Sacred Law - Universal Truths
Crows are symbolic and the keepers of Sacred Law, or Universal Truths. They are solid black, in every way, symbolizing their deep connection to the void, our collective unconscious, and our pure potential from which things begin and creation emerges.
Crows can travel through this space, through the void, to discover the unknown and get to the truth of all things. Crows guide us to improve our insights, helping us understand the intricacies of energy and how it mixes and transforms on an alchemical level.
With their social connection, they understand the importance of working together as a cohesive unit, symbolizing the universal connection we all share. They teach us that even when a tribe mate decides to take a bit more off the ends, we can rise above the petty quarrels and embrace the wisdom achieved from symbolic sight.
Crows are highly observant. Part of this is due to their ability to mimic sounds and even some mannerisms of both animals and humans. With this watchfulness, they understand the inner workings of those around them and can see through the fears of others. They teach us to embrace the concept of oneness, practicing compassion, understanding and nonjudgement.
The Crow reminds us that with every faith and religion, there are core spiritual teachings that appear over and over again –to honor the earth, to honor ourselves, to learn how to use our power wisely, to honor our tribes and one another, and to embrace the concept of oneness, and the connection we all share. Through their symbolism, we can learn our Soul Life Lessons and improve the quality of our lives and relationships.
Death / Shadows and Archetypes
In many spiritual traditions, Crows symbolize death. Although this can be physical death, it can also represent death of unresolved emotions, old behaviors, outdated beliefs, and fears that hold us back from spiritual growth.
The energy of the Crow is their mysterious ability to transcend space and time. They can see what we are unable to see clearly within ourselves. Often, they come into our awareness to alert us to the blockages that are preventing us from moving forward in our lives.
Crows guide us to get to the root cause of our issues, to the depths of our fears and shadow manifestations. They can show us exactly what we are missing. For most, the biggest fear of all is fear of change. We worry about the physical world, if we will lose financial success and stability, or the comfort of our routines.
At times we can even get stuck in the what if, ruminating pattern, becoming blind to the changes that need to occur within ourselves. Although change does involve our external life, we also need to go within, to our internal landscape to get to the root cause of our struggles.
When we hang on to the past, we stay stuck in those memories or emotions and our shadows manifest as a result. Crows teach us to let go of the old pains, traumas and tribal beliefs that prevent us from spiritual growth. They remind us that death is never the end, it is the beginning, the rebirth and transformation into something new.
Protection
Crows are notorious for protecting their tribe and nesting area. With their ability to shapeshift and travel between the earthly and spiritual realm, they are symbolic of protection.
At times, we may be moving along on our spiritual path and all seems good. Then suddenly things change and we are faced with new struggles and challenges. Sometimes we may even find ourselves saying, I just dealt with that crappy thing, now I have this too?!
The Crow reminds us when things remain calm for too long, we are just sleeping in the sun. They teach us that struggle forges inner strength and spiritual stamina. It is during our challenging times we need to reflect upon our own values and ensure they reflect a universal awareness, that what happens to one happens to all.
When we are feeling lost or unsteady, we can call on our Crow spirit guide to offer protection from the storm. Whether that is a physical world storm, or a storm in the mind, heart and spirit, the Crow offers insight, wisdom and a path to healing.
Shapeshifting
Throughout many spiritual traditions, Crows are seen as shapeshifters. With their ability to mimic vocalizations and behaviors, they can morph into what is around them, both human and animal.
With their connection to Sacred Law, and Shamanic spiritual traditions, Crows can bend the laws of the Universe, shapeshifting into various forms. This ability allows them to be in two places at once, as well as morph into a different being, acting as “a fly on the wall” to observe what is happening outside of their awareness.
This connection is not purely physical, it is also energetic. The Crow reminds us that we are responsible for learning to work with our inner power system. To learn from and retain the wisdom from the lessons we have learned throughout our journey and apply that knowledge into our daily lives.
One way to work with Crow spirit in shapeshifting is through energy work with the Chakra system. Working with the Chakras and their energy supports spiritual growth, healing and physical change. With our Crow guide by our side, we can work with their energy to shapeshift to retrain our mindset and intentions to aid us with inner work and manifestation.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As a Spirit Animal, Crows guide us through the depths of our past, to uncover hidden and repressed memories that block our spiritual growth. They teach us to let go of the fears, especially fear of change. They teach us to discover and confront our shadow sides, helping us bring our archetypes into the light. Through their shapeshifting symbolism, they offer a deeper path to healing.
Shapeshifting
In Shamanic spiritual traditions, with the ability to take on various forms, Crows symbolize shapeshifting. This allows them to be in two places at once, as well as morph into a different being, acting as “a fly on the wall” to observe what is happening outside of their awareness.
Shapeshifting has been part of Shamanic societies since prehistoric times. Shapeshifting, by definition, is described as a physical transformation of a Shaman into an animal, and then the Shaman taking on the behaviors of that animal. In many cultures, Shamans behave as animals in order to embody their thoughts, behaviors and actions.
During a shapeshifting ritual, the Shamans body mediates between the natural world and the spirit world, allowing the Shaman to retrieve ancient knowledge from the unconscious realm. It has been described as an altered state of consciousness, synchronizing the frontal cortex and limbic system.
Shapeshifting requires extraordinary perception in which the Shamans psyche merges with the sacred, to create a unity of consciousness. This ritualistic state of consciousness was used as a way to disconnect from the physical world and become one with the spirit.
During the Paleolithic period, it was common for humans to be highly observant of the behaviors and characteristics of animals as a way for survival. Shamans carefully studied the behaviors of nature and animals and developed a deep and profound understanding of the non-human world.
In their reflections, they discovered how many animals, like insects and reptiles, go through the process of metamorphosis and transformation. The concept of metamorphosis was used as a way of visualizing life beyond the physical world.
Through Shamanic tradition, there are countless stories of Shamans taking on the identities of Eagles, Wolves, Woodgrouse, Raccoons, Ravens and Crows. It is said that these animals carry a deeper connection to the spirit world, as they also serve as intermediaries or bridges between the natural world and unseen realm.
There is a great deal of wisdom held in historic spiritual traditions that we can embody in our own lives.
Studying Shamanic culture symbolizes the deep connection we share with nature and animals. This wisdom allows us to form our own personalized and symbolic connection with animals on our journey.
As Spirit Animals, Crows serve as a leader guide on our inner world journey. Similar to Raptors, Crows also have the ability to guide us through every aspect of inner work, through our mental, emotional and physical landscape.
Crows show us the truth of who we are and what we need to address within ourselves. Through their symbolism, behaviors, and vocalizations, they guide us to retrieve the hidden and repressed memories, emotions, and outdated beliefs that block us from spiritual growth.
Crows have the ability to go between the light and the dark, and they maintain no attachment or judgement to either side. They are silent observers, living in a neutral state of impersonal connection. This connection is not purely physical, it is also energetic. They can see into the depths of our beings, the light and the dark we all carry within.
They guide us to face our fears and release their hold over us. Going between the light and the dark is the heart of Shadow Work and they help us navigate the dark; while remaining detached to its grip, so we can find the light within. Our shadows are simply repressed parts of ourselves that need to be seen, heard and accepted.
Crows remind us that it is not about extinguishing the dark, it is about accepting those parts of ourselves and finding a way to work with that energy in its light, in its true power. The power that can heal from within and transform our physical reality.
Once we release the hold of the past, Crows guide us through the transformation stage of our journey. As we let go of the attachments that hinder our growth, we are led to a new path, our soul path. Through prayer and grace, we begin to fill the void of our old lives with new intentions and spiritual goals, so we can better ourselves and our lives.
The Crow reminds us that we are responsible for learning to work with our inner power system. Taking in the energy and wisdom from each experience that has happened in our past, so we can apply the knowledge into our daily lives.
We can work with Crow energy during meditative or contemplative states. Going to nature and observing the Crow in their natural habitat and viewing the world through their eyes can bring you closer to their energy. Then you can use these experiences to start a visualization meditation to deepen your connection to Crow spirit.
Crows always show us the truth of all things and help with blockages and the memories and behaviors we prefer to suppress. They are a trusted ally on our journey within.

POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, Crows symbolize Universal Truths and Sacred Law. They guide us on our own spiritual path teaching us to value truth above all, and to find the truth in all ways. Even if this involves deep inner excavation, peeling back the layers of ourselves, exposing our fears, doubts and outdated beliefs.
The path to the truth starts with self-examination, which helps us to understand our own motivations, values, beliefs, thoughts, and actions on a personal level, and on a universal level.
We all are part of the collective unconscious, and many of our behaviors and actions are a result of these outdated beliefs. We also have our own shadow patterns, which are part of our own past traumas, pains and turmoil that we have yet to release from our heart and minds.
The Crow reminds us that with every faith and religion, there are core spiritual teachings that appear over and over again – teaching us to learn how to manage our own power wisely. This includes our thoughts, speech, actions and even lack of action.
Our inner power resides within us and the Crow serves as a guide to help us navigate the many hidden, repressed, and interwoven paths of our inner landscape. To get to the truth, to help us release the hold of the attachments that no longer serve us. In doing so we can find our center of gravity, our inner power center and begin to use this power in its light in our own lives.
As we do so, we begin to understand the spiritual teachings, Sacred Law, to honor ourselves, to honor our tribes and one another, to practice patience, compassion and understanding, not judging those harshly that do not see eye to eye with us. We begin to embrace the understanding of the universal connection we all share and what is in one, is in the whole.

Communication
Magpies are master communicators, and they have the ability to vocalize in a variety of harmonics, frequencies, and amplitudes. Most are familiar with their boisterous, power squawk but they also have soft, rolling chirps and chatters. They also have an advanced vocabulary allowing them to mimic other bird sounds as well as human sounds. From chatty and charming to demanding and forceful, Magpies are never away from speaking their truth for the world to hear.
Magpies remind us to speak our truth, freely and authentically. As we go through life, it can become difficult to stay true to ourselves. We live in a society that is riddled with tribal fears, those that tend to see newness and the unknown as unsafe or abnormal.
It is often the road less traveled that leads to liberation. Letting go of survival fears and developing the self-esteem and trust within ourselves that we can forge our own path, without selling our soul to the highest bidder. There is freedom in living this truth that brings balance and harmony to our lives.
Relentless
The Magpie is relentless, they will never back down from a challenge or fight, representing intensity, strength, speed and vigor. When faced with adversity we can rise above the circumstance with unrelenting determination and find our path to become whole again. On the other side, if we are intensely pursuing a goal, we may get a blind spot, so it is important to maintain balance. With balance, you will keep your mind clear and sharp.
Duality
Magpies represent duality, representing two different parts or opposite elements such as love and hate, good and evil. They help us understand the dualities that exist within ourselves. They guide us to use this wisdom to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, allowing us to navigate the complexities of life with ease.
We can find balance in mind, body, and soul by letting go of survival fears. We can learn the lesson from the experience and achieve spiritual growth and maturity. Magpies also remind us that life is not just what we see with our eyes, there are hidden aspects just beneath the surface. There are always two sides to every situation, don’t let appearances and judgement lead you astray.
Individuality
Magpies symbolize freedom of expression and individuality. They remind us to speak our truth without fear and to honor our true authentic self. When we conform to the expectations of others, such as society, family, groups, friends and partners, we allow our survival fears to control us. When we continue to live in this state, we lose more and more of our true nature as our fears become deeper, and our shadows become larger.
We can break free from conformity and control, and free ourselves from this prison. When we look within, we discover our true beliefs and values, we can reengage our true nature. This allows us to live in our truth and light and embrace the inherent differences we all share. Welcoming diversity, unity, and oneness with all.
Materialism
One glance at a Magpie and their vibrant and bold plumage, it is clear to see how they stand in stark contrast to the natural world. Their bright colors are mesmerizing as the sun hits and reflects the blue, black and white hues, capturing the true essence of the imagination.
Magpies are full of glitz and glamour, and they remind us that it’s ok to be flashy sometimes, especially if we are revealing our inner light and beauty to others. Magpies are also known for liking shiny things. While appreciating beautiful things is okay, too much glitter indulgence can lead to superficiality and materialism. Don’t let appearances lead you astray from your soul purpose.
Devotion
Magpies are very social, and they are often seen in pairs and groups. During mating season, the devoted couple will spend several months together from building the nest, to caring for the young, both the male and female Magpie take part in raising their young representing partnership and devotion.

This does not minimize the significance of their sighting. Seeing a Magpie could portend a message that something you have been planning but have been hesitant to move forward on has been given the green light from the Universe, it’s time to take action and move forward.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As a Spirit Animal, Magpies can guide us to learn many of our Soul Life Lessons, some of which include honor, truth, communication, and active listening. They can guide us on our path to inner discovery while teaching us to honor ourselves and those around us.
Communication
Magpies symbolize the power of communication. For many, it can be difficult to speak up and to set boundaries. This could be the result of being shy and finding social interactions awkward or it could be insecurity due to self-limiting beliefs that you’re not worthy or good enough to be heard.
While for some, it could be the opposite. Communication is achieved through domination or perhaps even aggression. There is way too much ego and interference.
Some will do this out of discomfort of the quiet and others will do this to maintain power and control over the conversation. There are also times when we can get obnoxious in conversations with others. Perhaps we are excited about the topic and just lack self-awareness to take a moment to pause and let the conversation breathe.
On the flip side, we could be fully aware we are dominating the conversation and are doing so with conviction. This could be to prove a point, to be right, or it could be out of fear that we will lose our power and control.
On the flip side, we could be fully aware we are dominating the conversation and are doing so with conviction. This could be to prove a point, to be right, or it could be out of fear that we will lose our power and control.
When we take time to reflect and get to the root cause of our inner challenges, we can release the fears and doubts plaguing us. This allows us to become self-aware and understand ourselves in a deeper, more meaningful way. Enabling us to be mindful with the words we chose, while engaging in active listening. This will help us foster a deeper understanding of others and allows for more meaningful connections.
Honor Oneself
Magpies remind us to honor ourselves and our own unique individuality, and to courageously walk the path. We all have a purpose, and we all belong in the world. It can be difficult to remember this as society as well as our family and friends pressure us into conformity.
If we allow our survival fears to take hold, we allow ourselves to be controlled by others or we are relentlessly trying to control all aspects of our lives from situations to people. When we continue to live our lives the way others expect us to, we are not being authentic or honoring our true nature.
The thought of breaking free from tribal beliefs causes great fear, as breaking free means that change is coming. For many, fear of change can be worse than being controlled by others.
However, as spiritual beings, we are not meant to live in a state of fear and panic, we are not meant to be controlled by others, and we are not meant to live in a state of desperation to control the narrative of all things in life.
When we get to the root cause of our emotional challenges, we can restore our self-confidence and self-worth, giving us the courage to embrace our true authentic nature. When we let go of past hinderances we become aware of the beauty that is life.
Our worlds change for the better because we allow our true self to shine through. We establish more meaningful connections and live a more peaceful, balanced and fulfilling life.

Some believe Magpies to represent the nosey one, always full of gossip and jumping into things that do not concern them, while others believe they are tricksters and symbols of deception. The Cheynne Tribe considers the Magpie to be a sacred messenger of the Creator. Associated with Eastern tradition, the Hopi and Pueblo tribes view Magpies as a navigational guide.
Celtic
Due to their dualistic nature, in Celtic spiritual traditions, Magpies are seen as both good and bad omens. In their light, they symbolize connection with the spiritual world and are harbingers of messages from the Divine. In the shadows, given their ability to travel between both worlds, it was believed they have the power to steal souls.
Far Eastern
In Chinese spiritual cultures Magpies are regarded as symbolic of long life, good luck and happy marriages. Many stories tell of their role in Chinese Valentines day at the Qixi Festival when it is believed that Magpies form an energetic bridge for soul mates to reunite. This made Magpies a symbol of love and happiness in Chinese culture.
Magpies are viewed as sacred and if someone kills a Magpie they will suffer a horrendous fate. In Koren culture, Magpies are the harbinger of good news and if they appear with a Tiger, they represent good luck.

Seagulls continue to show their adaptability with their wide menu selection. They typically forage for marine invertebrates, fish, insects, smaller birds, and they have been known to snatch the young and eggs of other unsuspecting gulls.
For those living in rocky shore areas they typically forage for mussels, crabs, or crayfish. In mudflat areas they are mostly seen searching for worms, clams, and mussels. In the open water they are more predatory and will seek out small fish and squid.
Seagulls are social and protective of their own kind. There are times in our lives when we are faced with changing circumstances. We may have a goal or plan in place and are following it to the letter, but the Universe has other plans for us. Perhaps we keep getting saddled with minor issues that build up over time, or we have a huge setback and need to stop and reset.
The Northern Flicker reminds us to go with the flow of change and remain flexible and adaptable. When we try to control the narrative, we let our ego take the lead and this could hinder something amazing from manifesting in our lives. Humility goes a long way.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As Spirit Animals, Northern Flickers can guide us through our inner landscape, helping us discover and release fears, doubts and outdated beliefs. They also help us rebuild our lives by embracing change and our individuality and life purpose. Northern Flickers also teach us the power of communication, from speaking our truth to communicating with grace.
The Power of Communication
With their powerful vocalizations and musical talents showcased by their power beaks, the Northern Flicker symbolizes masterful communication. They have the ability to make their voice heard miles away, while also speaking in soft, rolling chirps and squeaks as they talk amongst themselves.
The Northern Flicker represents every style of communication in from grace to overbearing and everything in between. They serve as a powerful guide to all forms of communication with ourselves as well as in our relationships and day-to-day interactions.
There are times in our lives when we are challenged in communicating. Maybe we are lacking confidence and are having trouble voicing our needs and concerns. Or perhaps, or we are being too assertive and overbearing, not allowing others to be seen or heard.
When we are faced with these challenges it is easy to blame others for our struggles. When we get stuck in the “why me” and “how could they do that to me” mentality, we lose sight of the truth of what is going on. It may be time to hold up the mirror and take a look at ourselves. We are, after all, the common denominator in our struggles, especially if the same pattern keeps repeating itself.
The Northern Flicker can guide us on our inner world journey. When we dig deep within, we can get to the core of our struggles, attitudes and behaviors that cause blockages in communication and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. We can release the fears holding us back from growth and work with the light of our shadows.
This enables us to build a strong mental, emotional and physical foundation and find balance in our lives. Things that used to bother us or trigger us will seem small and insignificant. This wisdom allows us to develop better a relationship with ourselves and others.
Embrace Change and Repair the Foundation
Northern Flickers do not migrate, so they represent the changing seasons of nature, which also depicts the changing cycles of life. They are also connected to the Air, Earth and Water elements.
They live on the land in parks and cities representing Earth, and in wetlands and swamps, representing Water. They connect to the Air element with their ability to soar high in the sky. Water symbolizes transformation, cleansing, and emotions. Earth symbolizes stability, grounding, and strength. Air symbolizes freedom, liberation, flexibility, thought and connection.
There are times in our lives when we need to ebb and flow on the wings of change. It could be self-facilitated change, such as starting a new health routine or meditative practice, or it could be self-inflicted change. As humans we are resistant to change as we value our comfortable lives and routines and as a result, we can block change from occurring in our lives. Even if it desperately needs to happen.
Change comes swooping into our lives when we have reached a point where blind ignorance will no longer quell the issue. The self-inflicted change notices can be particularly painful to deal with as they typically involve the loss of something that we place great value. It could be a job or relationship or something physical like a home. As we navigate the complexities of the situation it is easy to get fearful and lose sight of the greater lesson.
As our fears take hold our emotions, thoughts, and actions become irrational, chaotic and unbalanced. We lose our center and our stable foundation. We often look in the wrong place to retrieve our secure foundation. We look to the physical world, for forces like money, power, and financial security. To truly retrieve our solid foundation, we need to look into the depths of our being.
The Northern Flicker can guide us on our journey within. With their red and yellow connection, they connect to both our Root Chakra and our Solar Plexus Chakra. Our Root chakra represents grounding, security, stability, community, family, group bonds and tribal beliefs. The Solar Plexus chakra represents individuality, personal power, will, self-esteem, inner strength and determination.
As we dig deep within, the Northern Flicker can help us discover our survival fears and the connections to the past where the traumatic memories and experiences originated. So, we can return to the proverbial scene of the crime, one last time to release the pain from the experience and let go of the suffering. In doing so, we can find the wisdom the experience is there to teach us.
With wisdom comes understanding but it also involves change. Changing our behaviors, our lives, the way we look at the world can be challenging. The Northern Flicker reminds us with courage, strength and adaptability we can overthrow our fears, embrace change and find peace and balance within our inner and outer world.
Individuality and Purpose
Their plumage and vocalizations also make them stand out as individuals. They are larger size with a beautiful, black scalloped pattern across their backs and bodies, and the males have either red or black cheeks. The Northern Flicker has a powerful beak and when they are creating a song on wood, trees or even a metal object, they can be heard from miles away. They are unmistakable when they arrive in our lives.
Their bright and bold colors serve as a reminder to always let our true authentic self-shine through. Being unique is part of what makes us each special. Their powerful vocalizations and their tribal beats can speak to the depths of our soul and serve to remind us to always stay true to our purpose with honor.
Every person has a fire in their soul that cannot be extinguished. Our incarnations may adjust the temperature by adding to it, or expanding it, but the core remains the same, our true nature. Once we find our sacred rhythm and hammer it home, we begin to see new patterns emerging in our lives. We see the journey unfold that got us to where we are today. We can see that we truly are exactly where we are meant to be.
TOTEM ANIMAL
Those born under the Northern Flicker totem are stable and strong and have exceptional balance in their lives. This is a unique characteristic as they also prefer the unconventional route. Whether that is problem solving, or finding balanced energy within a group, they have a flair for approaching things from a creative, logical and fair position. They make great moderators, and most are champions for “everybody wins”.
Northern Flicker people value the importance of balance in mind, body and soul. They strive to ensure they have a stable spiritual foundation, whether that is a simple five-minute mediation to an in-depth prayer practice, they are diligent to maintain emotional and mental stability. They understand the value of balance between the inner world and outer world.
With the energetic song and powerful drum beat of the Northern Flicker people are also creative and may be musically inclined. Music comes in many forms, it may be playing an instrument, writing or singing, but it could also come in the form of working with musicians as a producer, agent, director, or set designer for music videos. There is no limit to the creative potential!
POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, the Northern Flicker can guide us in communications, individuality and flexibility.
With their strength and power, they can help us build confidence to communicate more effectively. Whether we mince our words or have trouble mustering up the courage to speak, tap into the power of the Northern Flicker’s song and the powerful drum beat of their beaks. We have the inner power to find clarity in our thoughts and words to ensure our voice is heard.
The Northern Flicker serves as a powerful ally in staying true to ourselves and our unique path. It can be difficult to maintain your purpose and stay on your individual path. With so many individuals trying to drop their own fears off with you, telling you how you will never get a job looking like “that” or your hobby will never pay the bills.
But rest assured, you do not need to pick up the baggage of others and carry it with you. You can tap into the power of the Northern Flicker energy to live independently and confidently, knowing deep inside that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
They also bring their powerful energy to remind us to stay flexible in the midst of change. As chaos emerges in our lives it can be difficult to be open to all that is changing around us. We fight change because we feel we know better but unfortunately that just isn’t the case.
The more we fight the changes that need to take place in our lives the more we suffer. The Northern Flicker reminds us to tap into their fearless and courageous energy and remember that we can weather any storm and arrive safely at our destination. On the other side of change is transformation and rebirth.
HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM
Native American
In Native American spiritual culture, the Northern Flicker is seen as a harbinger of good luck. A red flicker feather can represent positive change in fate in overall happiness and relationships. The yellow flicker feather can represent healing, growth, and renewal.
Some tribes view the Northern Flicker as brave and courageous. It has been noted that Northern Flickers are the first to return to a disaster site and with their powerful call, they will alert the other animals that it is safe to return. They are brave and fly the path and weather the storm no matter where the path leads.
Celtic
In Celtic spiritual mythology, the Northern Flicker represents loyalty and soul connection. This is demonstrated by the flicker mating for life and that this connection is eternal and beyond our physical world. With their red coloring, they are also associated with femininity, power, and the spiritual world.
DUCK PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Ducks are part of the waterfowl family of birds. There are several variations including dabbling, diving and perching ducks. The Mallard, Teals and Shovelers are classified as dabbling as they live in shallow water. Perching ducks, like the Blue Duck or the Brazilian Duck, will perch high in trees near the water.
Diving ducks, like the Ring-Necked Duck and the Ferruginous Duck, have smaller bodies and more compact wings than dabblers. In the water they pull their feathers close which allows them to sit lower in the water, forcing air that is trapped between the feathers to be pushed out, allowing them to dive with ease.
There are hundreds of different species of Ducks, found all over the world, except for Antarctica. Ducks all share similar characteristics of a round, hefty body, elongated neck, round head, bill, webbed feet, and wings. Most Ducks have large, wide bills, but there are some Ducks with small bills and even hooked bills, like the Breeding Horned Grebe.
One of the most common ducks we see are Mallard Ducks. Breeding males are very vibrant and typically have a metallic green head, yellow bill, white collar, chocolate brown breast and greyish colored body. Females are variations of dark and light brown, with an orange and black bill.
In flight, the breeding Mallard Duck male has a black and white tail with a bright blue wing patch. The non-breeding male is similar to the female, with brown coloring, although they are darker brown in appearance. They also have the black and white tails, with the hint of green on their heads. Whereas Juvenile males are mostly brown with a purple wing patch.
For the non-breeding Mallards, they shed all of their feathers at the end of breeding season. This renders them flightless for just under four weeks. During this time, they are vulnerable so they become secretive and illusive. Their feathers molt into a concealing plumage which can make it tricky to identify them.
The typical menu selection for Ducks includes seeds, aquatic vegetation, fish, and aquatic insects and larvae. Mallard Ducks are dabblers so they tip forward in the water so they can “dabble” to eat what is just below the surface. They also will forage on land and eat vegetation, as well as ground prey.
During migration, they primarily eat seed and grain. They also approve of nature visitors leaving tasty snacks. Not all human food is safe for Ducks to consume though. Ducks can eat most fruits, but steer clear of citrus. They can also eat corn, peas, lettuce, oats, grain and sunflower seeds.
Throughout breeding season, Ducks will consume foods with higher nutrition to keep their strength up. During this time, they will eat animal matter, including aquatic insect larvae, snails, worms, and shrimp.
Breeding males and females begin courtship during fall and winter. They do not mate for life but many, like the Mallard Duck, will pair up with their mate from the previous seasons. Ducks say farewell to each other at the end of summer, a perfect ending to the summer of love.
Ducks have a synchronized ritual which includes head bobbing, whistles and grunts. The male will dip his bill in the water and then as he rears back up, he lets out a sharp call. The female will also swim towards the male with her head lowered during courtship rituals.
As for habitat, Ducks are found in lakes, streams, rivers, reservoirs, and large bodies of water. They also live near wetlands, marshes and city parks. Ducks are unique in that they primarily live in the water, but they also fly and live or nest on the land.
Ducks are classified as overwater nesters, cavity nesters or upland nesters. Overwater nesters include diving ducks such as the Ruddy Duck, Redhead and Ring-Necked Duck. These Ducks make their nests on floating mats of emergent vegetation, such as cattails. These nest sites are generally located near wetlands and deep water with dense vegetation.
Cavity nesters include Wood Ducks, Buffleheads, and Goldeneyes. Of the three nesting sites, cavity nesters are more limited, as their nest is located in trees. They specifically use the holes made by Woodpeckers. These Ducks also seek out trees that are old or decaying and have damage from the elements. The Female Duck seeks out these specific nesting cavities as the hole must be large enough for safe entry and exit, but also have enough room for the eggs.
Diving Ducks such as White Winged Scoters and Lesser Scaup are considered upland nesters. For dabblers, Mallard Ducks and Pintails are also upland nesters, as they nest on the ground.
For dabblers like the Mallard duck, the female will form a shallow bowl on the ground in moist soil. Interestingly, she does not venture out for nesting material, rather she uses the resources available in the immediate area. The female will pull vegetation towards her while sitting in the nest.
While she is laying eggs, the female lines the nest with leaves, twigs and grass that is nearby. Females will also pull vegetation to camouflage herself from predators once on the nest. Once incubation begins, she will pluck her own down feathers to line the nest and cover the eggs. When the nest is complete it is about a foot in length and the nest bowl is up to 6” deep and up to 9” across.
A Mallard Duck female will lay up to 13 eggs and incubate them for just under a month. Once hatched, it takes under 16 hours for the newly hatched Ducks to leave the nest, as they are born covered in down and are alert and focused. They are led to the water by the Female, and immediately begin to forage for food on their own.
The young Ducks stay close to Mom for the first couple months. When they are about two months old, Juvenile Ducks are ready to take their first flight and begin their independent life.
Ducks are social creatures; they live together in groups and seldom get into disagreements with their tribe mates. For Ducks, they find large groups more peaceful than smaller groups. An interesting fact, if they are left in solitary conditions, they will become depressed and lonely, which can make survival difficult. They need other Ducks to thrive in life.

KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Balance
Ducks fly in the sky, live in the water, and on land, connecting them to the elements of Air, Earth and Water. Water represents unconscious, purification, transformation, and emotions. Earth represents stability, grounding, strength, safety, and nurturing. Air represents the mind, liberation, flexibility, thought, and connection.
Together they represent staying grounded, maintaining clarity of thought, and balancing the connection between our heart and mind. With balance, we can embrace change and achieve spiritual liberation.
There are times in our lives when it feels like our world is spinning out of control. Maybe we just started a new job or group project and we are finding it is taking more of our time than we had anticipated. We struggle to get it all done but are left feeling drained and exhausted.
When we take on too much, we lose balance in our physical bodies as well as our emotional and mental landscape. Ducks remind us that chaotic thoughts, unbalanced emotions, and aches and pains, are signs that we need to pause, reflect, and look within.
When we quiet the noise of our external world, we can listen to our inner voice. We can find the clarity and guidance we need to refocus and recenter ourselves. When we do, we can find balance and stability in our thoughts and emotions, while staying grounded in our physical body.
Emotions
Ducks are deeply connected to water. They live in lakes, streams, rivers, reservoirs, and large bodies of water. They also live near wetlands, and marshes. Ducks primarily live in the water, floating on the tides, feasting and foraging with their friends, but they also fly and live on the land. Ducks symbolize the connection of mind, body and soul.
With their deep connection to water, Ducks symbolize hidden and suppressed emotions, the conscious and unconscious mind, and letting go of attachments and fearful thought forms. By exploring the repressed aspects of ourselves we bring them into awareness. This allows us to attain a deeper understanding of ourselves, the universe, and the Divine connection we all share.
Trust & Community
Ducks are social creatures, living together in groups, peacefully with their tribe mates. For Ducks, large groups are preferred over small groups, as there is a greater sense of community. They do not like the solitary life, and if they are alone, they become depressed, making survival difficult. Ducks understand that they need other Ducks to survive and thrive in life.
Ducks are symbolic of community and support. For many, they may feel that they can go through life alone and that is the only way to survive in this world. Whether that is from past experiences that resulted in disappointment or betrayal, there is a deep inability to trust the help of others.
In times like this, we need to ask ourselves why we feel this way. What could possibly go wrong in letting someone help or take the lead? Asking ourselves these self-reflective questions can guide us on our path of self-discovery. Much of the time, we can find our answers in the past, with painful memories that are long overdue to be released.
We have the inner strength to release the hold of the past and view our experiences from an impersonal view. Retaining the wisdom that each experience serves as our teacher on our journey.
Ducks guide us to release the fears and not let judgement or misunderstanding get in the way. They teach us that people are an important part of the journey and embracing others is what helps us continue to grow and evolve.
Social Connections
Mallard Ducks are especially social, they are committed to their tribe as well as their mate. As we observe them in nature, we can witness how they imprint with ease. They not only socialize with their own kind, but other animals too, like Seagulls and Geese.
Even though they say goodbye to their female partner at the end of each summer, they are reunited once again come Spring. They are devoted and committed to their social interactions, finding comfort and support in the routine.
Ducks teach us to embrace people with an open heart and open mind. They guide us to release outdated tribal beliefs and judgment so we embrace the connection we all share. Ducks teach us to approach relationships with grace, patience, and compassion while staying true to their inner voice.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As a Spirit Animal, Ducks guide us on our path of self-discovery, helping us retrieve hidden and repressed emotions, and fears that block our spiritual growth. As we get to the core of our inner turmoil, they guide us to release the hold of the past, so we can balance our emotional landscape.
Trust and the Emotional Landscape
Ducks are social creatures. They live with their tribe mates peacefully, working together for the good of the whole. For Ducks being alone dampens the spirit, making survival difficult, as social connections and community are what bring their soul to life.
They are also deeply connected to water, as they live in various bodies of water, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, and marshes. Ducks live their life floating on the tides, feasting and foraging with their friends, but they also fly and live or nest on the land.
With their connection to water, Ducks symbolize hidden and suppressed emotions, the conscious and unconscious mind, and letting go of attachments and fearful thought forms. By exploring the repressed aspects of ourselves we bring them into awareness. Ducks guide us to work through our thoughts and emotions in a healthy way so we can stay grounded and centered in our lives and relationships.
As we go through struggles in life, we carry those memories and experiences with us. If we fail to work through the emotions from the experiences, the wounds fester, causing havoc in our lives. The inability to trust ourselves and others, as well as fear of change are more challenging aspects to work through.
When we get to the root cause of our inner struggles we can release the hold of the past. We are not meant to stay locked in painful emotions, we are only meant to keep the wisdom the experience was service to teach us.
When we begin to look at our experiences symbolically, we can let go of the victim mentality, the why me and the need for justice and retribution. We begin to embrace the truth that each person and experience in life serves as our teacher on our journey.
With this wisdom, we begin to develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, cultivating trust and faith in our own intuitive guidance system.
Our intuitive guidance system is like a muscle, the more we use it, the stronger it becomes. In the beginning, it can get tricky as the insights coming through often do not make sense. This is because our rational mind lives in survival mode and is always reviewing how we will survive. Will we have shelter, money, status, power etc.
When we cut through the chaos in our minds and release our fears, we can find clarity in the guidance we are receiving. We begin to trust what we are feeling and sensing, and we can start to take action on it. The more we use our intuition, the stronger we become. As we become spiritually grounded and centered with our inner self, we trust and have faith that we are fully aligned to our soul path.
TOTEM ANIMAL
For those born under the Duck totem, they are social, engaging, laid back, even tempered, patient, and have a strong emotional landscape. They are very sociable and either have a large family, makeshift family, or a large group of friends. For some it may be all of the above!
For Duck people, they approach every new person with an open heart and open arms, as they value the emotional depth of human connection. For those under the Duck totem, being alone weighs heavily on the spirit. Their soul sings when they are connected, sharing, and embracing others.
They have an easy-going, light nature about them. Overall, they like to keep things light and simple in their lives. They find drama and toxic folks draining so they steer clear of situations like this. Duck folks prefer to look on the bright side and find the positive in all situations.
For those born under the Duck totem, they have deep and complex emotions. They are feelers and have an intuitive sense of what others around them are feeling. They never want to see someone hurting so they are always there to lend support, or a listening ear. They are trusted friends and partners.
POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, Ducks can teach us to find balance and strengthen our social connections.
For many, being independent is easy. They know if they are at the helm, that all things will be taken care of as expected. The problem with this approach is that they tend to take on more than they can handle. This can often lead to burn out and feelings of resentment and despondency.
Ducks remind us the importance of finding balance and embracing our tribe for support. It may be true doing things one way will give the intended result, but in doing so, we miss out on the opportunity to grow and evolve. We learn more about ourselves as well as those around us when we embrace human connections.
It can be challenging to ask for help as many view this as a sign of weakness but this is just not true. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. It shows you place high value on your emotions, mental state and physical body, and can admit and accept your limitations.
