As Spirit Animals, Reptiles symbolize freedom, liberation, transformation, rebirth, spiritual growth, duality, intuition, quiet reflection, even temper, and adaptability. As Spirit Animals, Amphibians symbolize awareness, balancing the heart and mind, emotions, life-force, duality, and adaptability.
TURTLE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Turtles are part of the reptile family, as they are cold-blooded with vertebrates. Like many reptiles, they also have scaley skin and lay eggs. There are hundreds of Turtle species worldwide. Some Turtles live on land, while others live by rivers. There are also aquatic species, like Sea Turtles, that live in the water. There are a few species that develop a human connection and make great pets like the Box Turtle or the Red Eared Slider.
What sets Turtles apart from other reptile species is their outer shell. Their shell is comprised of bone, collagen, keratin and skin. The top of the shell is called carapace, and the bottom is called plastron, they join to create a seal that represents the same thickness of their body. The Turtle shell is affixed to their ribs and backbone, so they can literally never leave their shell! This bony or cartilaginous shell helps protect them from predators.
Interestingly, there are only a few species of aquatic Turtles that have a soft shell, like the Soft-Shelled Turtle. Their shell casing is comprised of leathery skin instead of bone. This is represented by a layer of dermal bone that allows for some flexibility when maneuvering, while remaining ridged for protection.
There is also some debate over Turtles vs Tortoise. The difference between these two are Tortoise strictly live on land and cannot survive in deep water. The best way to identify them is the Tortoise has large, roundish feet that resemble an Elephant, while other Turtle species have webbed feet for swimming.
Due to the species diversity, they come in an array of colors and patterns. Most turtles are brown or black in color so they can blend in the environment. There are some species that are orange, red, yellow, and green in color, with some appearing with bright color designs on their shells or skin. What is unique about the Turtle is their shell patterns. Many have ornate and intricate details depicted on their shells with some circular and some in tribal designs.
Turtles have a varied menu selection as some species are carnivorous, some are herbivores, and some are omnivores which is a combination of both. The carnivorous Turtles’ typical forage for fish, frogs, snakes, even small mammals and birds. The herbivores variety will forage for various vegetation such as grass, reeds and algae. Turtles have hard beaks that allow them to capture and tear food apart.
Turtles have a wide range of habitats and can be found in oceans, deserts, forests, and coastal dunes. Aquatic turtles live in the ocean. Other Turtle species can be found in rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands. Tortoises can be found in rainforests, deserts, forests, and coastal dunes. Due to their cold-blooded nature, they do not live in the North or South poles.
For the most part, Turtles move slowly and methodically around their environment. The average speed of a Turtle is about 2 MPH, and aquatic species swim about 4 MPH. Some species of aquatic Turtles can reach speeds over 10 MPH which is quite fast for a Turtle!
Their behavior as well as evolution play a factor in their movements. Turtles tend to stay close to their food source, so they do not need to exert too much effort. They also have a slow metabolism which also allows them to wait longer between meals. Unlike most animal species, Turtles generally do not need to be quick to survive. Although it would help against predators, they find life better in the slow lane.
Turtles have a very long life-span, with some species living over 100 years. For most species they average between 25-50 years old. Some Sea-Turtles as well as Giant Tortoises can live over 100 years.

KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Patience
Most species of Turtles are known to move slowly around their worlds, with most averaging speeds of 2-4 MPH. For the Turtle, this methodical approach to life works for them. They find habitats with a steady food source where they are not required to travel far for nutritional needs. Turtles value the quiet life as they do not want to miss any important details that may pass if in a rush.
Turtles remind us that it is important to slow down in life. Rushing around at roaring speeds, stressing out over life can cloud our heart and mind. This can hinder our judgement, making it difficult to make good decisions. When we cultivate patience and inner strength, we can find clarity to balance the heart and the mind. We can find peace within. The turtle reminds us that we can accomplish anything when we focus and take one small step at a time.
Roots/Foundation
For the Turtle, they wear their home on their backs and cannot detach from it as it is affixed to their rib and backbone. This tough outer shell is made of bone, keratin and skin that serves as a shield, protecting their vital organs. Many Turtle species can retreat into their shells for further safety.
Turtles teach us to find stability and balance in our lives and represent our spiritual and physical foundation. When our spirits are out of balance, we can lose our footing, and our inner world can become unmanageable. We may start to question things in our lives but have no idea what to do about it. The same is true if our foundation is unstable, whether that is our physical body or our environment, feeling unsure where we belong in the world can have energetic consequences.
The Turtle reminds us the importance of finding our roots and our foundation in life. For many, they rely on the foundation of others for safety and security. Jobs, relationships and money are a few that top the list. When we do this and we lose one of these resources, it can shake us to our core.
When we place our life force into that of external sources and experience a loss, we lose our center. When we are faced with struggle and challenge the experience serves as a teacher on our journey. Perhaps the lesson is to let go of survival fears and develop a spiritual foundation or the lesson could represent finding stability and security within ourselves and trusting that we can survive on our own.
Balance
Turtles have the ability to live in the water as well as the earth. For most species they spend a balanced amount of time living in both the water as well as on land. With their webbed feet, they swim through the water to forage for food or communicate with their fellow turtles, then perch themselves on a sunny rock just above the water line.
With their connection to land and sea, Turtles represent both the Earth and Water elements. Water represents purification, cleansing, transformation, and emotions. Earth represents stability, grounding, strength, safety, and nurturing. Together they represent staying grounded and balancing the connection between our mind and emotions.
Grounded in the earth and flowing free like the water, we can understand the complexity of our emotions and express ourselves in a much deeper way. When we take the time to get to know ourselves, in an honest way, we cultivate balance and inner strength. With self-awareness we can get to the root cause of our hinderances and release them. Although change can be difficult, it is necessary for healing and growth.
Wisdom
Turtles live a long life in their physical bodies. For most, they live between 25-50 years, and there are some species that have been reported to have lived more than 100 years. Although as humans, we may think 25-50 years is not that long, for a wild animal this is quite a triumph. Many animals fall victim to prey or to the nefarious actions of humans which can shorten their lifespan.
With such a long lifespan, Turtles symbolize wisdom and inner strength. As they pause and take time to reflect on their surroundings they glean the wisdom from each experience. They are in no rush to hurry off as they understand the value of taking time to go within.
When we find our quiet center, we can gain new insights, focus our thoughts, and understand our emotions. When we take the time to dive deep into our inner world, we gain a better understanding of ourselves. This allows us to truly live in the present moment with innocent acceptance. Like the Turtle we can find a sunny rock on the shoreline to bask in the gentle tide of the water’s edge and take in the warmth of the sun.
Adaptability
Turtles can survive in a wide range of habitats, from forests to wetlands to oceans. They also have diverse eating habits ranging from carnivorous to herbivores to omnivorous. Turtles remain adaptable to their surroundings and can locate a new habitat and food source when needed. It may take them time to arrive, but they have the inner stamina to make the journey.
They teach us to embrace change and allow transformation to take place in our lives. Change can be difficult as it requires us to let go of situations, people and experiences.
We may feel safe and comfortable in our daily routines and those we surround ourselves with but when we learn our lessons we outgrow those experiences. It is time for change so we can discover our new lessons for growth. If we refuse to change, we stagnate and then become stuck.
The Turtle reminds us to stay open and adaptable to new experiences that are trying to come into our lives. Many times, new opportunities are knocking but we are too stuck in our heads or emotions to see them clearly. When we embrace change, we can let go of the old to make way for the new.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As Spirit Animals, Turtles teach us how to cultivate patience, wisdom, stamina and inner strength. They can guide us on our path to inner discovery and guide us to release our wounds from the past, paving the way for transformation and growth.
Patience
Turtles are very patient creatures. They move slowly about their lives and take time to stop and capture each moment. For the Turtle, it is a peaceful existence and one that requires little effort. They tend to stay close to home where their needs are met with ease. And when traveling, it is a calmer road, but they know they will arrive there.
This approach to life may seem boring and mundane as most of us are used to excitement and engagement in our lives. However, for many, the action of the day to day is what serves as a distraction from taking the time to slow down. Afterall, when we slow down, we do tend to have an increase of thoughts and emotions come to the surface.
Although continuing to ignore these inner messages may work for a while, it will only take us so far as we will eventually begin to have trouble in our lives. It may start off with feeling lack luster or despondent, but it can quickly grow to resentment and frustration. If left unchecked, we can start to express our internal unhappiness towards others and become depressed or even aggressive. This can damage our relationships as well as our careers.
When we take time to get to the root cause of our inner struggles, we can release ourselves from the fears, doubts and self-limiting beliefs holding us back from progress and growth. At the core of our emotional pain, mental blockages and much of our physical pain are unresolved traumas and memories from the past that we continue to carry with us.
When we find our quiet center, we can gain clarity and insight. This gives us the ability to look at each experience through a symbolic lens. We can let go of the victim mentality, the why me and the need for justice and retribution. As we begin to see how each person and experience in life serves as our teacher, we begin to cultivate patience, inner strength and resilience.
It can be difficult to let go of certain memories, especially the ones that bring great shame and guilt. We must remember that, as humans, we are not meant to live in a prison, attached to the shell of the past hurts. The Turtle reminds us to let the dead carry the dead. When we let go of what no longer serves our highest good, we reset our internal energy and bring healing to mind, body and soul.
TOTEM ANIMAL
For those born under the Turtle totem, they are generally wise, patient, methodical, emotionally intelligent, and live a long life. Their wisdom comes from within as they value harmony and balance within mind, body, and soul. They typically value their meditative or self-reflective time and practices as this is when they can tap into the inner voice for guidance and wisdom.
Although to some, they may seem boring as they take the slower approach to life. To them they prefer to savor every moment, so they do not miss a thing. This approach also helps them gain wisdom in the natural world as they tend to be very observant of people and their surroundings. It would not be far-fetched to call them an old soul, they seem wise beyond their years.
Turtle people are very patient and take time to understand both sides of the story. This natural ability helps them develop deeper relationships with others as well as themselves. It also serves to help them in their careers as they typically are in a role with heavy communication and significant decision making.
POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, Turtles can empower us to find balance and patience in our lives.
With their connection to the elements of Earth and Water, Turtles have a powerful energy related to stability, emotions, and balance. They teach us the value of patience and taking our time to look within, to reflect on our situation from all angles. Turtles guide us to tap into our inner wisdom for guidance so we can find the best outcome.
There are times in our lives when we feel stuck and can’t seem to find a path forward. Whether that is a big decision or significant change is needed in our lives. Or perhaps we have no clue why we are feeling so melancholy or despondent. But we know something “feels” off.
Often, we are plagued with thoughts and fail to see the bigger picture of our circumstances. We may be feeling this way because it is time to change our circumstances as our current situation has run its course. Turtles teach us to slow down and let go of the chaos in our minds so we can find clarity. Finding balance between heart and mind allows us to tap into our inner guidance so we can find a clear path forward.
HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM
Native American
In Native American spiritual traditions, Turtles represent stability, foundation, and the Earth. In many traditions with their shells, Turtles are seen as protectors of the earth and spirit. They remind us to walk gently among the earth and all creatures as we are on sacred ground.
Celtic
In Celtic traditions, Turtles symbolize our connection to the earthly and spiritual world. Turtles have the ability to see the bigger picture, so they open the pathway for our subconscious minds to see beyond the illusions of the physical world. They also represent a strong connection to the Earth and Water element, representing stability and emotions.
FROG PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Frogs are part of the amphibian family, which means they can breathe underwater. As larvae, they have aquatic gill breathing, and when they become adults, they develop lung breathing capabilities. There are thousands of frog species throughout the world, they all share similar characteristics of a stout body, scaley or warty skin, large back legs that fold underneath them.
As a result of the species diversity, Frogs come in a variety of colors with most being varying shades of green. There are many species that are vibrantly colored and are found in shades of blue, purple, yellow and red. In general, the brighter colored Frogs are poisonous with toxic skin. This serves as a defense mechanism to repel predators.
The Poison Dart Frog is bright yellow with a black band. They are lethal due to the insects they eat in nature and the poison coats their skin which prevents them from getting eaten by predators. Interesting fact, when these Frogs are in captivity, they are no longer toxic due to their diet change.
Frogs range in size, from the size of a dime to over two feet in length, although most are about 3-4” long. The life cycle of a frog is quite interesting as they go through a transformative process called metamorphosis. They start off as jelly-like eggs where they remain for several weeks. They hatch as small tadpoles, and they remain in this stage for over two months.
During the tadpoles’ initial weeks of life, they stay close to a food source and do not venture out much. They typically eat plants and vegetation they can grab as they swim by. Over time they begin to grow their arms and legs and as they get stronger, they begin to venture out for alternative food sources, like insects.
As they go through the metamorphosis process their tails shrink away and skin grows over their aquatic gills, and they begin to develop eardrums and lungs. The final stage is about a twenty-four-hour process when the transformation is complete. Then, they become tiny adult Frogs and emerge from the water onto land to begin their new life.
As adults, Frogs are less reliant on water although they stay in cooler, shady areas. They live a variety of habitats ranging from woodlands, meadows, rainforests, sand dunes, wetlands and ponds. Some species of Frogs will live in parks or gardens. They tend to be close to streams, lakes, or bodies of water so they do not dry out.
Even though Frogs lose their aquatic gills and grow lungs as they transform into adults, they retain the ability to stay underwater for extended periods of time. Their skin can absorb oxygen from the water which allows them to breathe. This helps them during winter months when many species hibernate at the bottom of ponds. There are a few species of Frogs like Toads and Tree Frogs, that live on land. During winter months, they will hibernate underground or on land under a leafy litter.
Frogs hibernate during winter months to survive. They are unable to control their body temperature when it drops below freezing, so this helps them regulate their system. They can survive hibernation because they slow their heart rate and metabolism down enough that they do not require food. Although there are some species of Frogs that will come to the surface when temperatures rise above freezing to venture out and forage.
As tadpoles most species are herbivores and feed on plants and algae. They grow out of this stage when they mature. Adult Frogs menu selection consists primarily of invertebrates. Based on the size of the species this can range from flies to grasshoppers to slugs. There are some larger species that will eat other frogs, lizards and mammals such as mice or voles.
Frog behavior varies from species to species. Some are nocturnal and only hunt and feed at night while others are diurnal and sleep at night to hunt during the day. However, most Frogs are diurnal. Their behavior is also unique in that some species, like the Poison Dart Frog, are very social and live in groups. Whereas many other species like the Wood Frog are solitary and prefer to live alone.

KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Transformation & Rebirth
Frogs go through a metamorphosis in the early stages of their lives. They begin as eggs and emerge as tadpoles. They say in this tiny aquatic state, living and breathing under the water for several months.
As they transform, they begin to lose their aquatic lungs and tail, and develop lungs, eardrums, arms and legs. The final transformation process takes about twenty-four hours, and once complete, these tiny tadpoles emerge as tiny adult frogs and they hop out of the water onto land. They are ready to start their new lives in this big new world.
As we navigate our life journey, we are faced with new opportunities or challenges along the path. When change is self-facilitated things are simpler. For example, we look within and can clearly see if we need to find balance in some aspect of our lives and make a choice to take action to address it.
For many, change can be the root of all evil as change means loss and the unknown. At its core, this is a true statement. Letting go of old beliefs, attitude and behavior patterns as well as moving on from jobs or relationships can feel like a loss. We get comfortable in our routines and what is familiar.
Although the journey is unknown, with every ending there is a new beginning. Like the tiny tadpole swimming underwater that grows into a Frog with legs to navigate the land, transformation leads to rebirth. As we leave our pasts behind and emerge onto land, it can feel like the very first time as we look around at the new world before us. It is a liberating feeling because anything is possible.
Emotions
Frogs are deeply connected to our emotions. As they emerge into life, they are born and live underwater in the first stage of their life. It takes several months for them to grow and be able to live on land. Even as adults, most remain near the water as they hibernate in the winter months below the water’s surface. Their skin serves as their breathing mechanism and absorbs the oxygen while they are under water. Many Frogs also stay near the water to ensure their skin does not dry out.
Frogs can guide us to work with the complexities of our emotional landscape. They represent our intuitive side and balancing our emotions so we can tap into our own inner wellspring for guidance.
Our internal guidance system can easily get clouded. If we are stuck in too many thoughts or heavy emotions, it can hinder our ability to see clearly. We can further block ourselves if we are filled with negative emotions such as hatred, anger and resentment.
Frogs remind us to dive deep into emotional waters and release the fears and negative emotions that are blocking us from progress and growth. In doing so, we can find the clarity we need to overcome our struggles and find a path forward.
Duality
Frogs symbolize duality. They have the ability to live both in and out of water, and they are also both solitary as well as communal, living in groups. Frogs further represent duality in their defense mechanism. Frogs are found in every color. However, the most beautiful and vibrant colored Frogs are actually the poisonous. Duality represents two different or opposing elements, typically depicted as good and evil, or black and white.
Frogs can guide us on our path to self-discovery as we navigate the complexities of our emotions and work through our traumas and pains, they can help us understand the dualities that exist within ourselves. They can serve as an ally in shadow work, helping us shine a light on our shadow sides, so we can work with their energy in a positive light.
They also serve as a reminder that duality exists all around us there are always hidden aspects just beneath the surface. Whether we are faced with a difficult relationship or a challenging circumstance, taking time to let the moment breathe and allowing that breath to fill our inner space can provide the clarity we need to find the right path forward.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As Spirit Animals, Frogs can guide us on our inner world journey. They can provide guidance and support as we navigate the complex nature of our emotions while embracing the duality that exists within.
Emotional & Physical Balance
Frogs are deeply connected to the element of Water. They are born underwater and as they mature, they learn to navigate this underwater world. Once they become adults, they have lungs and live on land, and most species never lose their deep connection to the water.
As they hibernate to survive the harsh winter months, they again submerge themselves underwater, into ponds and stream beds. Although they lose their aquatic lungs as tadpoles, they can still live underwater as their skin absorbs the oxygen from the water allowing them to breathe.
Frogs are deeply connected to the element of water, which symbolizes purification, cleansing, transformation, intuition, emotions, and spiritual growth. Frogs jump into our lives to let us know when our emotions or physical body are out of balance.
For many, it may be both. We may be feeling out of sorts emotionally while also experiencing headaches or back pain that just won’t go away. It may be easy to determine that we are feeling tired because we are just working too much or took on a bit more at the gym than usual. We tend to dismiss it and move on with the business of life.
Our bodies are designed to alert us when we are out of balance. Perhaps we did just take on a bit much and after a quick reset, all will be good. Or maybe there is a bit more going on, just below the surface. Our emotions and mental state play a role in the quality of our health.
As we experience challenges and traumas in our lives, we carry those emotions with us and if we fail to properly work through and release them, they can become unmanageable, causing disruption in our lives. This can come in the form of difficulty in our careers, challenges in our relationships to physical pain.
For many, it is too easy to blame others for our problems so we take this route, which can cause even greater difficulty, exasperating the situation further. We fail to take the time to see the lesson being presented to us as we continue to ignore the nagging feelings or pains, hoping they will just go away.
Unfortunately, they will not go away on their own and we will reach a point where we need to take action. If we stop and pause, and take the time to go within, we can ask ourselves reflective questions and find a path forward. Asking questions like, “why do I feel this way” or “what is this situation trying to teach me” can provide clarity and insight to illuminate this path.
When we get to the root cause of our fears, insecurities, outdated beliefs and negative behavior patterns we can work through our struggles from the past and release the hold from the painful memories. At the core, they are just memories, and although painful, they do not define who we are in spirit.
As a Spirit Guide, the Frog can guide us to discover hidden memories as well as the emotions we have blocked or repressed. They teach us to work through our emotions in a healthy way and release the pain but retain the wisdom from the experience. Every experience and person we encounter in our lives serves as a teacher on our journey to learn our Soul Life Lessons.
Duality / Independence
Most Frog species are independent creatures. They value their solitary living as it can prevent competition for resources as well as offer protection against predators. For some species is about health and reproduction. They find an increased success in breeding as there is less illness and disease.
For some, being independent comes naturally. They navigate challenges with ease and strength. They find the courage to face the fear so they can find a path forward. While for others, the thought of making a final decision on a matter or doing something alone causes great angst. When we lack confidence or are fearful, even the smallest task can seem monumental.
Fear in itself is a dual force. We can become overwhelmed with fear in our mind and emotions. We may be fearful of change or loss, or we may be fearful of intimacy or expressing our emotions. Fears left unresolved manifest into shadow patterns, which can cause chaos and disruption in our lives.
As a Spirit Animal, Frogs represent duality, two equal but opposing forces. They represent the dual nature of independence and serve as a reminder that we can take responsibility for the quality of our thoughts, emotions and actions.
When we get to the root cause of our fears, they can serve as a powerful resource to show us our weaknesses and areas for improvement. Working with our fears and shadows in their light can enlighten us and push us out of our comfort zones, guiding us to become stronger and more resilient in the face of adversity.
TOTEM ANIMAL
For those born under the Frog totem, they are strong in spirit and face challenges with grace and ease. They understand at the root of challenge is change and an opportunity for growth and transformation. They embrace this with fearless courage.
They rely on their inner self to guide them in all life matters and the value the importance of balance in all aspects of life. You may find them interested in metaphysical or mystical realms. There is a potential for strong connections to the spirit world.
Those born under the Frog totem are emotional beings. They feel big and love hard – although it takes time for them to trust to form this deep emotional connection. They value deeper connections in relationships.
Frog people are committed to family, home and hearth and generally have a close-knit inner circle of relationships. They have the ability to see beyond the illusion and you can’t pull the leaves over the Frogs eyes, they can intuit when someone is being untruthful.
POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, the Frog has a powerful energy that can guide us to uncover memories from the past and work through the complexities of our emotions. They also serve as an ally to manifest abundance and good luck.
If we are stuck and we are trying to understand our thoughts and emotions so we can discover what is holding us back in life, the Frog serves as a guide to self-discovery.
They can help us navigate through our past memories and find the wisdom each experience was there to teach us. As we embark on this path, the Frog helps us keep our thoughts and emotions in balance so we can stay clear and courageous on the path.
Frogs symbolize fertility and abundance, with their ability to create hundreds of eggs and nurture them to life. If you are using manifestation, the Frog can serve as a powerful ally. If you are looking to increase good luck or a prosper outcome to a project, visualize the female Frog as a guide for abundance.
HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM
Native American
In Native American spiritual traditions, Frogs symbolize transformation, growth and rebirth as well as fertility and prosperity. With their transformative process from birth to adulthood, they represent the development process from childhood to adulthood. With their ability to reproduce hundreds of eggs during breeding season, they represent the birth of creation and abundance in life.
Celtic
In Celtic spiritual culture, Frogs are highly regarded especially with their deep symbolism with the element of water and earth. Under the water element, they are sacred and seen as healers and can purify thoughts, emotions and dreams. Representing the earth element, they symbolize foundation, roots and stability.
LIZARD PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
There are thousands of species of Lizards represented all over the world. With this diversity, they come in every color. Most are found in green and brown, although there are many with vibrant blue, red, and yellow hues. There are several species of lizards like Anoles and Chameleons that can change color to match their environment.
Lizards have distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from other reptiles. They are generally scaley skinned, with a head, slender bodies, a long tail, legs and arms. Although not all Lizards have every one of these structures.
Some Lizards also have unique features such as horns, frills and wings (flaps of skin attached to elongated ribs). They also have ear openings vs actual ears and Lizards can open and close their eyelids, adding to their unique traits.
They also go through a transformation process called ecdysis, which is the shedding of their skin. This allows them to grow in size, remove parasites, heal wounds, and maintain their scales. This process generally takes a few weeks from start to finish.
They are diverse in their habitat and can be found just about all over the world. Most Lizards live in warmer climates as they cannot regulate their body temperature in the cold. It is interesting to note there are a few species that can live in colder climates as they have learned to regulate their body temperature. An example is the Pygmy Short-Horned Lizard.
Lizards are very adaptable and have the ability to thrive at sea level as well as higher elevations, such as the mountains. Most live on the ground in deserts, forests, and mountains and near water areas. Lizards are not picky, they can be found in nature areas, open fields, parking lots, and neighborhoods. If the climate is right and there is a food source, they can generally call it home.
They have a wide menu selection depending on the species. Most Lizards are insectivores, with a diet consisting of a wide range of insects. There are a few species that are carnivorous, like the Comodo Dragon who will prey on birds and rodents. A few species of Lizards, like the Iguana are herbivorous and only eat greens. This is because they are unable to digest animal protein.
Lizards have a unique defense mechanism, and they will detach from their tail if under attack. They do this at a specific fracture site and although it will regenerate, typically it will grow in a bit smaller and possibly, with slightly different coloring. Some species like the Horned Lizard can squirt blood from their eyes up to five feet to ward off predators.
They also have amazing senses and use their tongue to help them navigate their worlds. They flick their tongue into the air to pick up chemicals to taste them to help them find food, communicate with other Lizards as well as avoid predators. Lizards also use their sense of smell to help them find food sources as well as for mating.
LIZARD SYMBOLISM INTRODUCTION
As Spirit Animals, Lizards symbolize embracing change, healing, transformation, confidence, and spiritual growth. KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Embrace Change
Lizards are very quick and adaptable. They are always on guard in their surroundings and are ready to move fast out of the line of sight of a predator. If they get caught off guard, they can drop their tail for a quick escape. For the Lizard, they are adaptable to change and ready to react, no matter what the circumstance.
There are times in our lives when change is imminent. Maybe we know that there is downsizing at our company or that our significant other has indicated that things are not so peaceful within the relationship. We can choose to sit by and wait it out to let the other person make the move, perhaps secretly hoping that we don’t have to be the bad guys, or so we can get sympathy from others.
We have another choice. We can stand fearlessly in the face of change and see the situation for what it is trying to teach us. That it is time for change. If we reflect about sitting idly by, does that really feel good? Constantly worrying about when our boss will call for the “big meeting” or always stuck in the thoughts of “how will I survive without this person in my life” – it is an endless cycle of ruminating thoughts.
The Lizard reminds us that we can break free from this endless loop and embrace change in our lives. We can find our inner strength and confidence and let go of what no longer serves us. Like the Lizard shedding its skin, we can embrace the transformative process and end the cycle and allow our lives to evolve for the better – on our own terms.
Regeneration/Healing
Lizards are unique as they go through a shedding process called ecdysis. This process allows them to restore health, eliminate infection and, as they regenerate new skin, they experience physical growth. They are also distinctive in that they can detach from their tail at a specific fracture point to escape if they are trapped or under attack. They go through the process of regeneration and healing as they shed their old skin and regrow a lost tail.
There are times in our lives when we find ourselves feeling out of sorts. Maybe it’s being tired all the time or not feeling motivated to get through the day. For some, it could be physical annoyances like increased headaches or allergies. When we are faced with these situations, it is time to look at ourselves and our lives and see if we need to find balance.
Perhaps we need to take more time for ourselves and start a new meditation routine to help calm our mind or emotions. Or we are feeling slow and sluggish and it’s time to look at a new exercise or health regimen. For others it may be time to go within to our inner world to work with our spirit. The Lizard reminds us when we shed the old we make way for the new. We can transform and grow spiritually, bringing healing into our lives.

Lizards are very diverse with thousands of different species all over the world. They also come in an array of colors from green, blue, brown and red. For some species, like the Anole and the Chameleon, they have the ability to change their color patterns to blend in with their environment. This transformative process happens quickly as they use this as a defense mechanism against predators.
With the Lizards diversity they illustrate the value of transformation. For many, change can be difficult enough to bear but then there is the transformation process that accompanies it. Transformation can be painful, as we release fears, outdated beliefs and negative behavior patterns, we go through a transition process between our old and new self. Our old patterns continue to emerge wreaking chaos, which can get even more confusing.
As we shed what no longer serves us there is some infighting between the ego and higher self as the ego has been leading the way. This is all part of the process and in time, it will pass. As the clouds lift, we begin to feel lighter and more at peace as we make our way through the transformation stage. Our higher self will become the dominant force in our lives, and we will begin to find peace and balance within once again.
Fearless and Confident
The Lizard is a confident and fearless reptile. Given its size and how it is under the watchful eye of many predators, they are always on guard in their surroundings. Yet they do not let fear get in the way of the daily activities. With confidence, they continue to scurry across the ground foraging for food. They know how to survive.
They can live in a variety of habitats from the desert to the mountains, illustrating their resilient nature. With their defense mechanism of dropping their tail in battle and their ability to shed their skin, they teach us the value of letting go of what no longer serves us. They also teach us to stay resilient and endure the journey.
Letting go of what is comfortable and what we deem safe in our lives can cause great fear. We fear change because we fear what we do not know and what we cannot see with our physical senses. When we start to let go of the past, we begin to realize there are current situations and people in our lives that we also need to let go of. We wonder what we will do without that person or place.
The Lizard shows us how to confidently and courageously embrace the journey. We may be feeling fearful now with the changes and the unknown, but on the other side is light and hope. When we let go of what is old, we make way for the new that is ready to come into our lives.
As we embark on our new path, we build inner strength and resilience. We become more confident in our thoughts and decisions and when faced with challenges, we can fearlessly rise above them. We are no longer led by fear, we are led by faith.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As Spirit Animals, Lizards can guide us on our path to embrace change, heal, transform, and grow spiritually. They show us how to surrender and accept change in our lives and then go through the transformative process of rebuilding our lives. Lizards can help us navigate the challenges of change and transformation and find a path to healing.
Change Notices
Lizards move very quickly, and this adaptable nature serves them well from predators. They remind us of the importance of staying open and ready for change. Although for humans, change can cause fear, for the Lizard, they are fearless in their pursuit of survival. Even if the path requires dropping their tail, or running left vs right, they are ready to take action.
Change can arrive in our lives with a raging boom, or it can arrive softly. Maybe we have been thinking about starting a new hobby, or exercise routine as we have been feeling things are dull in our lives. Or perhaps there has been this slight nagging feeling that maybe it’s time to move on from a job or relationship.
Although for many, we like the comfort of our familiar surroundings and routines. However, we are not meant to stay stagnant as when we do, we block ourselves from development and growth.
If we stay in the same daily patterns and relationships, we block ourselves from new experiences and relationships that are meant to facilitate our life lessons. Every person and experience serve as a teacher on our journey. Even our most painful experiences and relationships serve to teach us lessons for growth.
If we ignore the softer messages, change will arrive at our door. The Universe has a way of waking us up if we have kept our heads in the clouds too long. Typically, we experience great loss or tragedy in our lives, and it comes in like a thunderous boom. These experiences are meant to shake us to our very foundation.
As we face the challenge before us it can be difficult to see through the chaos to find the lesson the experience is trying to teach us. It may be that we need to move on from that situation as it is no longer serving our highest good. Or perhaps we need to learn a lesson in vulnerability or humility.
Once we can clear the clutter from our minds we can start to work through and release the emotions attached to the experience and begin to glean the wisdom we are being shown. This enables us to find a path forward, to healing and transformation. With every end there is a new beginning.
Calling Back Our Spirit
Lizards go through a shedding process that allows them to release old skin cells, damaged scales and bacteria as well as restore their health by removing parasites. During this process they also regenerate and grow larger in size. They further illustrate their ability to regenerate by detaching from their tail if under attack. This defense mechanism comes with challenges as the tail can grow back smaller, but Lizards will go through this process to survive.
There are times in our own lives when we are faced with illness, either our own or a loved one. This process can be painful emotionally, mentally and physically. This is especially true with long term or chronic illnesses. There may be a path forward to healing but it’s a lengthy process.
Some illnesses can only be healed from the inside, through our spirit. If we are faced with a debilitating or terminal condition, there may be limitations as to how much we can heal physically. There is still a path forward to finding peace and wholeness.
We are not meant to hold on to unfinished business, we can go through the process of releasing old wounds, fears, behavior patterns and call back our spirit from its negative missions throughout our lives. For some, they may even be able to find peace with those they have harmed along their path. Forgiveness is a healing agent for soul growth.
Even if we are not being challenged with an illness, we can still go through the process of inner discovery. Each one of us can call back our spirit and release our unfinished business. Like the Lizard who sheds its tail, we can shed our fears, traumas and outdated belief patterns and find a path to healing and transformation.
TOTEM ANIMAL
Those born under the Lizard totem are strong, resilient, fearless, confident, resourceful, balanced and know how to survive. They also have deep emotions, and they value the importance of balance in mind, body and soul. They know that to serve others one must take care of themselves.
Lizard people are fearless in the face of challenge or pressures. Nothing can stop them from succeeding no matter the circumstances. They have a deep understanding of themselves and their emotions and fears so they can courageously brave whatever is in their path.
People rely on them for help in challenging or crisis situations. They have great insight to share from the wisdom they have gained throughout their life travels. In their inner circle they are the go-to support to help get out of a sticky situation.
POWER ANIMAL
As a Power Animal, Lizards can provide powerful energy to help us release our attachments and bring transformation into our lives.
Lizards are a strong ally in helping us release what no longer serves us. They give us strength and courage to release toxic relationships, dead-end situations and long held outdated beliefs. They illustrate this strength when they immediately detach from their tail when the situation requires it. They teach us to drop the old so we can pave the way for the new.
With their ability to shed they demonstrate the value of rebirth. As they shed their skin, they release the injured, damaged scales to make way for new healthy scales. Visualizing this process can give us empowerment as we embrace the transformation process.
HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM
Native American
In Native American spiritual culture, the Lizard represents healing, survival and dreams. With their ability to regenerate their limbs they are thought of as healers. In some traditions, they represent protection and strength. They offer guidance and safe passage to those who are traveling. With the Lizards connection to the spirit world, they represent the dream state and serve as guides on the dream path.
Celtic
In Celtic spiritual traditions, the Lizard symbolizes new beginnings, transformation and growth. They are seen as messengers that can teach us lessons in adaptability, survival and being resourceful. In some traditions, the Lizard is seen as a threat to the human species and their symbolism is connected to danger and power. They are also seen as a messenger between the natural and spirit world, while also encompassing supernatural abilities.
SNAKE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Snakes are reptiles that are part of the Serpentes family. There are over 3,000 species of Snakes found just about over the world. What distinguishes them is their long, limbless slender body, and tail. Snakes skin is comprised of scales that cover their entire body. Their scales serve two purposes, they trap moisture in dry climates, and they help reduce friction as the Snake moves.
Due to their thin body structure, Snakes do not have an internal bladder and their left lung is reduced, if not absent entirely. They also do not have movable eyelids or an external ear opening. Snakes do have an increased number of vertebrae, which allowed them to develop a tracheal lung in the neck area as well as a venom conduction system for subduing prey.
Snakes come in a variety of colors and patterns. Some are brightly colored in yellow or green, while others are more muted in blacks and browns. Many of the colors and patterns found on Snakes serve to camouflage or confuse predators. There are some species like the Arizona Black Rattlesnake, that can lighten and darken their skin.
There are about 600 species of Snakes that are venomous like the Red Spotted Viper, Rattlesnake, and the Albino Monocled Cobra. Their venom can produce paralysis, even death. However, science has found that Snake venom is useful as medicine and serves in hundreds of different medication compounds. Cobra venom, for example, is a powerful analgesic and non-addictive.
Nonvenomous Snakes are not all harmless, as Snakes eat their food by constricting their victim and swallowing them whole. Depending on their size, there are some Snakes like the Python and Anaconda, that can eat human sized prey. There are, however, many species of snakes like the Garter Snake, Grey Banded King Snake and the Blood Python that are completely harmless.
Snakes are equipped with an advanced intuitive guidance system. Since they do not have ears, they have forked tongues, which they will flick in different directions in order to smell their surroundings. This maneuver allows them to detect when danger or prey is nearby.
They can further intuit prey in the area as the bones in their lower jaw can pick up vibrations from scurrying animals in the surrounding environment. Some Snakes, like Pythons and Rattlesnakes, have openings near their eyes called pit holes, which allow them to sense the heat given off by nearby warm-blooded animals.
When a Snake captures its prey, they are able to consume prey with heads three times bigger than their own. This is because their lower jaws unhinge from their upper jaws. Once prey is inside of a Snakes mouth, they are held in place by their teeth that face inward, trapping them there. They do not have the ability to use their teeth for chewing.
Snakes are carnivorous and their typical menu selection consists of Birds, Lizards, Insects, Frogs, Fish, Mammals such as Squirrels and Rats, as well as other Snakes. They are opportunistic predators and have a diverse pallet. Interestingly, most Snakes do not eat daily, and most eat a couple times per week. The Emerald Tree Boa only requires nutrition every few months.
Snakes are cold blooded, and they rely on the temperature within the surroundings to regulate their temperature and generate body heat. This is why most Snakes are found in warmer climates and they are not found in places like Antarctica, Greenland or New Zealand.
Snakes can range in size from a 5” long, to upwards of 30’ long. Snakes continuously grow throughout their lifetime and they go through a transformative process of shedding every few months. As a Snake grows, their skin does not so it becomes tight and worn, requiring the shedding of the old.
The shedding process also aids the Snake by healing wounds and removing parasites attached to the old skin. Typically, Snakes will shed starting at the head and slither out of their skin in one long, inside out piece, which is quite awesome to see.
In nature, Snakes can live 20-30 years, which is quite impressive given the laws of nature. Interestingly, humans are the biggest predator to Snakes. This is due to habitat destruction, disease, as well as persecution and illegal trade. They are also hunted by big cats as well as Crocodiles, and even Bald Eagles.

KEYWORD SYMBOLISM DEFINITIONS
Healing / Transformation / Rebirth
Snakes are symbolic of the cycles of change. Similar to the changing seasons, they shed their skin and transform every few months. This process allows them to heal wounds as well as remove dead, worn out skin cells. As they shed the old, their new skin emerges and they transform and grow physically.
Snakes guide us to embrace change and the transformative cycles of life. They teach us to let go of our fears and release the mental, emotional and physical attachments that hinder our progress and growth.
There are times in our lives when imminent change is on the horizon. Perhaps we have gotten direct information alerting us to this or it is just a nagging feeling. We may try to ignore the signs in hopes that change will pass us by. We are creatures of habit and we tend to feel “safe” in our comfortable routines.
We always have another choice. We can choose to stand fearlessly in the face of change and view the situation symbolically, for what the experience is trying to teach us. That we have learned all we can from this specific person or situation, and it’s time for change.
When we get to the root cause of our fears, outdated tribal beliefs, negative behavior patterns, and our fear of change, we can work through our issues in a healthy way. We can release the hold of the past and the memories that have held us hostage throughout our lives.
When we release the past, we make space, and we can start to make choices and take action to facilitate meaningful change in our lives. We may need to let go of certain people or situations, or we may need to look within and let go of inner attachments that are blocking us from growth.
The Snake reminds us that change is a necessary part of the cycles of life. It may feel like the death of something of significant value, but where there is loss, there is transformation and rebirth.
Wisdom
Snakes can live up to thirty years, which is impressive given the laws of nature. Snakes also have an advanced intuitive guidance system. They do not have ears, instead, they have forked tongues, which they will flick in different directions in order to smell their surroundings. They can further intuit their surroundings from their lower jaw, which can pick up vibrations from scurrying animals.
The Snake guides us to embrace our intuition and the power of our inner wisdom. They teach us to look within for the guidance we seek and to develop symbolic perception, which allows us to see things from an impersonal view. Reviewing our lives in this way allows us to embrace the wisdom that every person and experience has been put into our lives for a purpose, to teach us our Soul Life Lessons.
Balance
For many, seeing a Snake can invoke immediate fear. For some it’s just the sight of a Snake, while for others, it is the fear of being bitten, and the aftermath of their poisonous venom. Part of Snake energy is a sense of urgency. They may be letting us know to expect the unexpected, change is imminent, or we need to find immediate balance.
When a Snake enters your awareness, it is time to be aware of your reactions. These could be your feelings, and emotions, as well as reactions to people, situations, and experiences. The Snake serves as a reminder that it is about finding balance between the heart and the mind to stay centered in every moment. To make a conscious choice to act with patience and compassion. It is time to be mindful and think things through before acting hastily.
Snakes can also serve as a warning. It could be treacherous terrain approaching or it could be immediate danger. Be mindful of your surroundings, it could mean it’s time to take a right vs a left on your path to avoid a sticky situation approaching. However, for the most part it will relate to a tricky situation coming up that will need to be addressed quickly. If ignored, it could result in a negative outcome.
Kundalini Energy
In many spiritual practices, the Snake symbolizes the Kundalini Awakening. This is an energetic experience that is connected to the Chakra system. The Kundalini is located at the base of the spine and it is something that we all share. Represented as a coiled Snake, this is our evolutionary force of wisdom, our feminine, creative potential.
Some people believe that there are ways to experience a Kundalini Awakening through yoga, meditation or working with the Charka system. Although it may be true, one can try and induce this experience, however, for the most part, it is something that occurs out of the blue, when the time is right.
Developing a deep spiritual practice that includes inner work, contemplation and meditation that results in a shift in consciousness is the true journey to the energetic life force energy of the Kundalini Awakening. Working with the energy of the Snake can assist one on this path.
SPIRIT ANIMAL
As a Spirit Animal, Snakes guide us on our journey of self-discovery, helping us discover the fears and outdated beliefs that are holding us back from spiritual growth. They teach us to release the hold of the past and embrace the new.
Guiding us to Embrace Change, Heal, Transform
Snakes symbolize the life cycles of change, as they shed their skin, they transform. They go through this transformative process every few months which allows them to heal wounds as well as remove dead, worn out skin cells. As their bright, shiny new skin emerges from the old, they transform and grow physically. Part of the shedding process allows the Snake to grow.
There are times in our lives when we need to ebb and flow with the cycles of change. Perhaps we are active participants and are starting a new health routine or spiritual practice. Or perhaps, we are resistant to change, even though deep down we know things are not working in our lives.
As humans we are resistant to change, as we value our comfortable lives and routines. As a result, we can block change from taking place in our lives. Even if things are toxic, we know what to expect day to day.
However, choosing this path, we continue to stagnant and fall deeper into heavy emotions and thoughts.
There are times in our lives when we ultimately reach the point where blind ignorance no longer quells the issue. The immediate change notices can be especially painful as they typically involve the loss of something that we cherish or place high value. It could be a job or relationship, or something physical like a home. As we navigate the complexities of the situation it is easy to get fearful and lose sight of the greater lesson.
As our fears take hold, our emotions, thoughts, and actions can become chaotic and unbalanced. We lose our center and our stable foundation. We are often full of fear and do not know where to turn to regain stability.
We often will look in the wrong place to retrieve our feelings of safety and security. We look to the physical world, for forces like money and power. To truly retrieve our spiritual center and our stable foundation, we need to look within, to the depths of our being.
When we get to the root cause of our inner struggles, we can release ourselves from the fears, doubts and outdated beliefs holding us back from progress and growth. At the core of our emotional struggles, mental blockages and physical pain are unresolved traumas and memories from the past that we continue to carry with us.
When we release the hold of the past it gives us the ability to look at each experience with symbolic sight. We can let go of the victim mentality, and the need for justice and retribution. With wisdom, we begin to see how each person and experience that enters our life serves as a teacher on our journey. We can free ourselves from the fear and we can find our own path to safety and security.
Transformation can be a painful process as it requires the death of something in return. As we travel in our inner landscape this can represent the release of old thoughts, attachments and behavior patterns. In the physical world, it may represent the loss of relationships, jobs or living situations. We must remember that death is not the end – it is the beginning.
Loss is never easy, and it is important to work through the emotions and thoughts that result from each experience. As we work through the pain, we can release its hold over us. We are not meant to carry the burden of the loss with us, we are only meant to keep the wisdom that the experience was there to teach us.
In doing so, we can embrace change and allow transformation to take place in our lives. We can heal the wounds from the past and embrace the new beginning that has arrived in our lives with an open mind and an open heart.
